2006 porsche boxster review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The most affordable porsche is fun and enjoyable. introductioncompletely redesigned for the 2005 model year, the porsche boxster is a superb sports car that feels right at home on a race track yet is comfortable enough for daily use. This is a car meant to be enjoyed every day, rain or shine, commuting or competition. porsche says it changed 80 percent of the boxster for 2005, taking more than half of the car from the 2005 911 carrera, including the steering, front structure, seats and electronics. Drivers wanting the ultimate in ride control and electronic handling assist should get the optional porsche active suspension management, or pasm, 1,990). This system allows the driver to select normal and sport suspension calibrations. In either mode, the active suspension system is a wonder, fulfilling its task of enhancing the driving experience by maintaining chassis equilibrium in all conditions. with so many upgrades and updates with the '05 model, it's not surprising that the boxster receives mostly tweaks for the 2006 model year. The base boxster 45,000) sports a 240-horsepower, 2. 7-liter flat six that mates to a newly developed five-speed manual transmission. The boxster s 54,700) is fitted with a 280-hp, 3. 2-liter flat six and a six-speed gearbox. For those who prefer automatic transmissions, porsche's five-speed automatic tiptronic s 3,210) is an option for either model. But it also interacts with the engine management system, psm, pasm and tiptronic s (if those are fitted) to provide a sportier driving experience through quicker throttle response, faster shifts and higher limits to the anti-spin control thresholds. standard running gear for the boxster is 6. 5x17-inch wheels up front and 8x17 in back, mounted with 205/55 and 235/50 performance radials, front and rear. The s gets 8x18s at the nose and 9x18s under the tail, wrapped by 235/50s and 265/40s, fore and aft. Boxsters can be ordered with the 18-inch s wheels 1,235). Also available are 19-inch wheels for the boxster 2,785) and boxster s 1,550), including a new 10-spoke carrera sport wheel. These big units measure 8x19 in front and 9. 5x19 in back and roll on ultra-low-profile tires. Porsche ceramic composite brakes 8,150) improve braking performance and reduce unsprung mass by almost 35 pounds. safety features on all models include a unique head airbag protection system. Frontal and side-impact airbags come standard. Safety for taller drivers was enhanced when the boxster was redesigned for 2005 with a taller safety bar and higher headrests. The side windows were enlarged at the same time, raisting the height of the roof. Antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution (abd), electronic stability control (psm), and traction control (asr) come standard on all boxsters. walkaroundthe boxster has a quiet look that speaks volumes about porsche design philosophy. There are no extraneous ducts or style-influenced bulges to be seen. Yet it's modern in the details that first made their way into the porsche styling idiom through the high-powered carrera gt (note the mirrors) and the latest 911. the headlamp treatment was greatly improved when the boxster was redesigned for 2005. Their aero-science helped fashion the body panels, a-pillars, the rear spoiler and door handles, and a fully covered undertray to create a more slippery profile with less lift and increased downforce, all good things when speed needs to fight the air. The inlets up front that feed air to the pair of front radiators (and a third cooler in the s) are bigger than those on pre-2005 models, and the large ducts in the rear fenders are bigger to direct more cooling air to the bigger brake discs. even where the eye can't see, the attention to crucial detail contributes to the durability and sportiness of the boxster. To cite just two examples: small spoilers on the front longitudinal suspension arms that direct airflow to the front brakes to help keep them cool; and small, flexible blades attached to the undertray that steer airflow toward the transmission for the same effect. to save weight, the boxster does not come with a spare tire; instead, an air compressor and tire sealant will have to do. We understand the advantages of this approach (it saves 22 pounds, some luggage room and a bit of cost), but we wonder about that poor driver crossing the nevada desert whose tire sustains the kind of damage sealant can't help (sidewall punctures, for instance). the tail clearly separates the current boxster from pre-2005 models. The seam between body and tail panels now runs above the taillight cluster, which itself has been broken into three elements with more contrast between the red and white areas. And the center high-mounted stop light is now composed of 18 leds for a brighter warning. boxster s models are distinguished from 2. 7-liter boxsters by their twin oval exhaust tips. interiorwhen it first appeared, the porsche boxster impressed us with its classic roadster look and road manners, but the interior styling and materials looked cheap and plasticky, and there lacked a general coherence to the switchgear and gauges. that's all changed. The instruments are black-faced in the boxster and a light gray in the boxster s. Data from the sports chrono system are displayed in the lower third of the tachometer's dial. a spiffy console integrates audio and climate controls. Music lovers can upgrade to the porsche sound package plus, which somehow manages to fit seven speakers, an external analog amplifier, two tweeters, a subwoofer in the instrument panel, and door-mounted woofers and subwoofers on each side. The system is dvd based via a separate module in the front trunk, which frees up the dash-mounted cd drive for music discs. notice we said front trunk. One of the boxster's delights is stowage both fore and aft, with no compromise to the rear trunk's 4. 6 cubic feet even when the top is stowed away. This vehicle originally came to us with a damaged convertible top. Canvas and hinges along with hydraulics were damaged however still complete. After some thought the decision was made to convert this car into a speedster style 911. The vehicle was given a full 100k major service, all oiler tubes replaced, valve cover gaskets replaced, spark plugs replaced, fuel pump/filter replaced, cam/crank sensor replaced, distributor cap and button replaced, alternator replaced and battery replaced. This car runs absolutely wonderful!!! We then moved forward and gave this 911 a fresh coat of guards red paint and accented it with a newer set of 911 wheels wrapped michelin a/s 3 tires. All new window switches, tail lamp (left, right and center) and all exterior gaskets were replaced to ensure a breathtaking paint job and exterior look. One will notice we have taken multiple pictures of the vehicle using natural light and studio light. This is to show the paint consistency and the way the car looks on both lighting. However, the pictures do not do it justice. This is stunning car in person. It comes complete with photo/paper documentation of the restoration, factory porsche wheels, clean title, multiple keys and books. Please call with any questions.
